Mandrake the Magician is a syndicated newspaper comic strip, created by Lee Falk (before he created The Phantom). Its publication began June 11, 1934. Phil Davis soon took over as the strip’s illustrator, while Falk continued to script. The strip is distributed by King Features Syndicate.

Mandrake, along with the Phantom Magician in Mel Graff’s The Adventures of Patsy, are regarded by comics historians as the first superheroes of comics. Comics historian Don Markstein writes, “Some people say Mandrake the Magician, who started in 1934, was comics’ first superhero.”  mandrake05

Davis worked on the strip until his death in 1964, when Falk recruited current artist Fred Fredericks. With Falk’s death in 1999, Fredericks became both writer and artist. The Sunday Mandrake strip ended December 29, 2002. The daily strip ended mid-story on July 6, 2013 when Fred Fredericks retired, and a reprint of D220 “Pursuit of the Cobra” from 1995 began on July 8, 2013.

Mandrake is a magician whose work is based on an unusually fast hypnotic technique. As noted in captions, when Mandrake “gestures hypnotically”, his subjects see illusions, and Mandrake has used this technique against a variety of villains including gangsters, mad scientists, extraterrestrials, and characters from other dimensions. Mandrake also possesses psychic and telekinetic powers, can turn invisible, shapeshift, and teleport periodically. His hat, cloak and wand, passed down from his father Theron, possess great magical properties which in time Mandrake learns how to use.

The Phil Davis years

Philip Davis (March 4, 1906 – 16 December 1964), better known as Phil Davis, was an American artist who illustrated Mandrake the Magician, written by Lee Falk. Davis was born in St. Louis, Missouri.

Davis continued to do Mandrake until his 1964 death from a heart attack. Falk then recruited artist Fred Fredericks for the strip.

    Good afternoon boutje777 (and everybody)

Companion G Raghavan, warned me about story 207, which is on the site, with some strips missing and with disjointed panels.

He managed to get everything ready and I prepared the file to be sent.

    Here is the link.

      @Henning B. Jensen

Those 2 Sundays are after 2000, so as Boutje777 says in the home page:
“I only place newspaper strips from before 2000, with the occasional exception”.

Sent me a mail I may help you with that…

Hello again Ar. It is of course Sundays 184 and 185 I miss in my collection – and not the Dailies as I wrote. It is early Morning here in Denmark and I made a mistake in my Answer to You. Best Henning

Hi there and thank you very much for these awesome comics. Mandrake was my favorite comic book character growing up. I can’t even begin to imagine what it must have taken to do all the fantastic work you guys have done as a service to those who share a love for Mandrake and The Phantom. My sincere gratitude and respect to all the guys make this little slice of internet heaven a possibility. Cheers, and here’s to many more years to come.

Thank you very much for this wonderful collection and this amazing blog. I should note, however, that the link for the Daily Strips 179-193 points to a very different content that has nothing to do with the Mandrake Daily Strips. In fact, it’s a chess software.

Mandrake, The Magician is very fascinating. Though during child hood it was an intrusion, but when growing up with my own kids, it became a welcome insight.

    Good morning Boutje (and everybody)

Some absence caused by strictly personal reasons, now leads me to try to start over (slowly) with new releases.
This time, with special authorization from our dear Boutje, we are going to overcome the rule that definitively means that strips dated after the year 2000 will not be posted.

However, in fact this character deserves that we complete all the existing stories, so I will launch the new stories from the daily strips in several sets (from D234 to D266)
    Let’s start

    Mandrake dailies – Set 1 – D234 à D238
