Rip Kirby is a popular comic strip featuring the adventures of the eponymous lead character, a private detective created by Alex Raymond in 1946. Displaying the talents of more than a dozen writers and illustrators, the strip had a long run, spanning five decades.
After World War II, Raymond did not return to work on any of his previous successful comic strips (Flash Gordon, Jungle Jim, Secret Agent X-9) but instead began work on a new strip in which ex-Marine Rip Kirby returns from WWII and goes to work as a private detective, sometimes accompanied by his girlfriend, fashion model Judith Lynne “Honey” Dorian. Her given name and nickname were borrowed from the names of Raymond’s three daughters.
Rip Kirby was based on the suggestion by King Features editor Ward Greene that Raymond try a “detective-type” strip. First published on March 4, 1946, the strip was given a huge promotional boost, even including fully painted promotional art, a rarity in comic strip promotions. The strip enjoyed enormous success, and Raymond received the Reuben Award in 1949.
During Raymond’s years on the strip, the stories were initially written by Ward Greene and later, following Greene’s death, by Fred Dickenson. Some sequences were also written by Raymond.
Comics historian Don Markstein noted how the character of Remington “Rip” Kirby broke away from the usual pulp detective archetype:
“Circulation rose steadily during the strip’s first few years — even tho Rip wasn’t the kind of private detective they were used to from pulp fiction. This one did more cogitating than fisticuffing, and smoked a leisurely pipe while he did it. He had a frail, balding assistant, Desmond (a former burglar), instead of a two-fisted sidekick. Instead of carrying on with an endless series of female clients, he had a steady girlfriend, Honey Dorian. If that wasn’t enough, he even wore glasses! Even Kerry Drake didn’t depart so far from the standard. If Rip was more sophisticated and urbane than the average fictional private eye, that’s okay, because he was very successful — both for himself and for the people who wrote, drew and distributed him.”
In 1956, Raymond was killed in a car crash. King Features quickly needed a replacement and found it in John Prentice.
Dickenson continued to write the series until the mid-1980s when he was forced to retire for health reasons. Prentice then took over the writing along with others. Prentice kept the strip going until his own death in 1999. The strip ended with Rip’s retirement on June 26, 1999. Prentice received the National Cartoonists Society Story Comic Strip Award for 1966, 1967 and 1986 for his work on the strip.

First revision, all stories are complete.
The 3 attached stories have been redone due to:
D069 – D070: Although the strips per page (2) were complete, they occupied less than a third of each page, that’s why I redid the stories.
D098: In this case, although the quality of the strips of the story that is on the site is a little better, all of them have the right part of the image “cut off”, I managed to recover the whole story.

6 Stories 1-6
Update/Revision – Rip Kirby
Group 1 – D001 to D006
At first, as they are on pages of 3 strips, I thought that for that reason, the missing strips in a story were in the next story.
In this group:
D001 the strip of 460422 was in the story D002
D004 the strip of 470120 was in the story D005
However, and fortunately all recovered, the following stories had missing the strips indicated below.
D002: 460624 – 460625 – 460626
D005: 470127 – 470128 – 470129
D006: 470804 – 470805 – 470806
D03 is complete, but since I prefer the individual strips, I also recreated it

Does someone has a storylist with specifications about dates and artists ? I only saw specific lists with stories 1-131, so it would be great if there is also information for 132–197. I can make one myself but it’s more convenient if such list allready exists.

Do you know the name of the New York newspapers that published the Rip Kirby daily strips in the fifities (1950-1959)? I think they could be the New York Daily Mirror or maybe the New York Daily News, but I am not sure and I haven’t found this information searching on the Internet

I am not sure but my guess would be The Daily Mirror because that one is from King’s Syndicate from Hearst, and that is known for publishing Kirby strips. Daily News is from Zuckerman and that has no connection at all with Kirby publications.

Good afternoon everyone.
Once again, I have to thank companion Jean-Pierre Toubeau for drawing our attention to the daily story 134.
Who like us in the group deal with thousands of captured strips it is always feasible to happen this kind of situations.
It’s no excuse, but I’m sorry all the same…
Very soon I will release the correct story.

Hi,
While I do mind that you have used much of my collection of Rip Kirby material to post, it would be nice to receive some credit for all the work that went into creating, and finding, all this material.

Hi. Meant to say I do not mind. I expect one of your contributors purchased them from me and provided them to you. The Rip (most post Raymond) and Cisco are from me but I do not expect they let you know this. As I said, I have no problem with you sharing.

Thanks, i never have a problem to give credits to who it belongs ofcourse, if i know. But it’s difficult sometimes, especially with large titles, which stories are from who. Very often i find them myself at various sites and groups, often when something is uploaded to the internet in a few months you can find them at various places, my only goal is trying to get all of them in 1 place.
LikeLike
Not a problem. People want others to think they have great collections and they are sharing them. Most of them have nothing but rely on others to have great collections to share with them. I think your site is terrific and very well supplied. Do you have a collection yourself or just pull all this stuff together into a good forum.

Thank you. I don’t have a real collection, i save all i find on the internet and get from others on one of my drives and place them together on titlepages on this blog, with as much information as i can find, i don’t want it to be a blog where you can only download as much as you can, i try to be a bit informative and educational as well, just like i try with my other blogs.

Good evening Boutje (and everybody)
Update/Revision – Rip Kirby
Group 1 – D001 to D006 (Rip01)
I started reviewing Rip Kirby’s early stories, in which the group had no intervention, based on the list of stories I have (wikipedia).
D03 is complete, but since I prefer the individual strips, I also recreated it
All with my covers

Update/Revision – Rip Kirby
Group 2 – D069 – D070 – D098
First revision, all stories are complete.
The 3 attached stories have been redone due to:
D069 – D070: Although the strips per page (2) were complete, they occupied less than a third of each page, that’s why I redid the stories.
D098: In this case, although the quality of the strips of the story that is on the site is a little better, all of them have the right part of the image “cut off”, I managed to recover the whole story.
